Wilson Tobs News Release
EDENTON N.C- The Edenton Steamers have the Wilson Tobs number this season. In the three games that the teams have played, Edenton has won all three. This is the second straight one run loss for the Tobs against the Steamers.
The Steamers opened the scoring with a 2 out single by catcher Kevin Whitehead in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The steamers led 1-0 after 2 innings of play.
The Tobs answered right back with some two- out magic of their own in the top of the third. Steve Nikorak (Temple) with one runner on base hit a 2-1 pitch over the wall in center field. The Tobs led by a score of 2-1. That lead was short lived as in the bottom of the third the Steamers bounced right back with a 2-run inning. Ryan Porter, with runners on second and third, grounded a 3-1 pitch right back up the middle to center field for a single putting Edenton back on top by a score of 3-2 after three innings of play.
The Steamers added another run on a balk by Gil Walker, which scored Ryan Brenner. Brenner reached base on a walk and then stole 2nd and 3rd base enabling him to score n the balk. Pitching coach Jason Immekus was ejected from the game after arguing the balk call. The umpire crew was the same crew who ejected Tobs Manager Bruce Johnson on the 9th inning on Saturday night after arguing a call at second base. The Score after four innings was 4-2 in favor of Edenton.
Wilson was fired up when coming to the plate in the fifth and the first three men reached base knocking Edenton's starter Brodie Liebrandt from the game. Reliever Jordan Glover entered with the bases loaded and nobody out. The Tobs got a quick run on a wild pitch as Brandon Elliot (Murray State) scampered home, then two straight RBI groundouts by Tony Wieber (Michigan State) and Jeff Kremer (Duke) let the Tobs re-gain the lead 5-4. The score remained the same throughout the fifth inning.
Brice Rivenbark (Winston-Salem State) had three scoreless innings under his belt when the top of the Steamers order came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs leadoff hitter Brian Blasik worked a walk and then John Polonius (who during the game was drafted in the 30th round of the MLB draft to the Cleveland Indians) hit a 2-2 pitch over the right center field wall to give Edenton a 6-5 lead going to the eighth inning.
The closer Ryan Turner entered in the bottom of the ninth for the Steamers and quickly retired Nikorak on a pop up to first. The next hitter was Tony Wieber who was called out on a bang-bang play at first. 1st Base coach Barret Shaft was ejected by the same umpire who threw out Immekus. Turner went on to earn the save his fourth of the season (two against the Tobs). Ethan Cole (2-1) earned the win for the Steamers. Rivenbark (1-1) and gets the tough loss. The Final Score was Edenton 6, Wilson 5.
The Tobs return home to Historic Fleming Stadium Wednesday evening to meet the Morehead City Marlins in a Coastal Plain League match-up. The Tobs will send RHP Chase Bebout (0-0) 0.00 ERA to the mound. The Marlins will counter with RHP Alex Facundus (0-0) 3.38 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
