THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The Forest City Owls went down against the Thomasville Hi-Toms, 2-1, at Historic Finch Field Tuesday night. The Owls fall to 4-4. The Hi-Toms improve to 3-4.
The night belonged to the starting pitchers. Akron's Andrew Brown took the hill for the second time this season tonight for the Owls. He threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits, striking out ten batters and walking one. Brown took his first loss of the season.
Hi-Toms starter J.J. Jankowski earned the victory, allowing one run on four hits, striking out 12 batters and walking one.
After four innings of no-run ball for both sides, Forest City put a run on the board in the top of the fifth. LF Nick Thimesch scored all the way from first base on 2B Hector Crespo's double to left-center field. The Owls led 1-0 after five frames.
The Hi-Toms knotted it up in the bottom of the seventh inning, when SS Stephen Carmon's sacrifice fly to deep center field brought CF Patrick Koontz home. That run knocked Brown out of the game. Ryan Tezak entered in relief and retired RF Jacob Rogers with the bases loaded to keep the score tied at 1-1 after seven innings.
Thomasville broke the deadlock in the bottom of the eighth inning. Koontz lifted a fly ball to left field allowing Brock Hebert to tag up and score. The Hi-Toms wrapped up the eighth ahead 2-1.
Travis Tingle slammed the door on the Owls in the ninth inning. He forced SS Jake Watson to ground into a double play, then got catcher Dan Burant to ground out to finish the game. The Hi-Toms achieved their first home victory of the season.
Carmon went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Koontz scored a run and finished with an RBI. Crespo went 2-for-4 with the Owls' only RBI.
The Owls wrap up their mini-road trip tomorrow night, when they travel to Sims Legion Park to face the Gastonia Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
