2011 CPL Rawlings Players of the Week for Week One Announced

The Coastal Plain League announced Tuesday that Columbia's Zack Smith was named the Rawlings Hitter of the Week, while the Co-Pitchers of the Week honors went to Forest City's Seth Cutler-Voltz and Corey Deighan of Asheboro for week one of action (May 31-June 6).
Smith, a freshman at Erskine, started six games on the week for the Blowfish and finished with a league-best .520 average. Of his 13 hits, two were doubles and one was a home run. Being among the Top 5 league leaders in several offensive categories, including being tied for first in total bases (18), second in hits (13), third in RBIs (8) and slugging percentage (.720). Smith, who is from Lexington, S.C., also scored five runs, featured an on-base percentage of .519 and was a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
On the mound, Cutler-Voltz from Virginia Commonwealth University made two starts for the Owls and came away with a perfect 0.00 ERA and a 2-0 record. The 6-0, 185-pound right-hander from Richmond, Va., earned wins over West Division leader Asheboro on the road, and a shutout victory of Thomasville. Over 14 innings of work, he scattered nine hits, giving up just one unearned run, while walking five and striking out a league-high 14. He also held opposing batters to a .173 average against him.
Meanwhile, Deighan, a 6-4, 220-pound right-hander from Jacksonville, Fla., made three appearances in relief for the Copperheads on the week. The junior from Charleston Southern was masterful on the mound, striking out five of the nine batters he faced, while working three innings of hitless baseball to earn a perfect 0.00 ERA and two saves.
