Steamers, Salamanders Split Twinbill

HOLLY SPRINGS, NC - The Edenton Steamers and the Holly Springs Salamanders each took a win in their suspended-game doubleheader on Thursday night. Edenton (4-3) took game one by a count of 9-3, and Holly Springs (3-5) outscored the Clams 4-3 in game two.

Eric Sheuermann collected the win in game one. Scheuermann (1-0) picked things up with one out in the second inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Matt Frisbee, who pitched the two innings before the game was suspended in Edenton, took the loss for the Salamanders. Frisbee (0-1) surrendered four runs on five hits while fanning three batters.

Teddy Christie was on the wrong side of the decision in game two for Edenton. Christie (0-2) lasted 4.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits with on walk to eight strikeouts. Andrew Papp won the decision for the Salamanders. Papp (1-1) held the Steamers to three runs on four hits while fanning two batters through 5.1 innings. Chad Sykes finished off the final 1.2 innings to collect his first save.

Game one picked up with the Teal and Black leading 4-0 with one gone for Holly Springs in the top of the third, and the Salamanders wasted no time getting on the board. With two gone Jon Rosoff singled to put a runner on for Danny Sheehan, who launched a shot over the left field wall to cut the Clams' lead to 4-2.

Edenton answered quickly with four more runs in the fourth. Tyler Ammerman and Bobby Schuman connected for back-to-back one-out doubles for the Steamers first run of the frame. Tony Rosselli continued the rally with a single to score Schuman, and Trey Hair drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Rosselli and Hair advanced a base each on a passed ball, and Aaron Aucker added two more runs with a two-out double to put Edenton up 8-2.

Trey Hair added an extra tally with a homerun to left field in the eighth, bringing the score to 9-2, Clams.

Holly Springs scratched one run across in the ninth, but the Steamers held them in check to take the 9-3 victory.

Game two also saw Holly Springs jump on the board quickly. Brandon Riley led off the first inning for the Salamanders with a homerun to right field to put his team ahead 1-0 through one.

Hair came through with his second dinger of the night, putting a ball over the left field fence in the top of the fourth to even things up at one apiece.

The Salamanders reclaimed their lead in the fifth. Consecutive singles from Chris Clare and Cody Roberts put two runners on with no outs. Conlin Hughes moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and Rosoff doubled in his teammates with a line drive double to left-center. Riley added a single in the next at bat to bring in Rosoff and give Holly springs a 4-1 advantage.

Edenton rallied in the sixth, cutting the deficit to one. After Rosselli was hit by a pitch with one out, Richie Cunningham poked a single into center field to put runners on first and second. Thatcher Coleman added a double to left to score Rosselli and move Cunningham to third. In the next at bat, Hair bounced a ball to first, and Cunningham beat the throw home to bring the count to 4-3.

The Edenton Steamers make the short trip to Hampton, VA, to take on the Peninsula Pilots on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The Clams do not return to Historic Hicks Field until Wednesday, June 15, when they will take on the Morehead City Marlins.
