GASTONIA, N.C. - A two-run double from Reece Hampton (UNC Charlotte) with two outs in the top of the fourth gave the RedWolves a 4-0 lead and they would hold-on to defeat the Gastonia Grizzlies 4-3 on Friday night (June 10th) in Coastal Plain League action.
Florence (3-5) notched it's first road-win on the season while closing-out a four-game road trip. Florence returns home Saturday night (June 11th) as they welcome in the Holly Springs Salamanders for the first time this season at 7:00 p.m. Be sure to join us for First Responders Night at Sparrow Stadium presented by A&I Fire and Water Restoration. First Responders can visit The Great RedWolf Tailgate sponsored by Carbis Solutions and enjoy free refreshments. The tailgate starts at 5:00 p.m. and gates open at 6:00 p.m.
RedWolves right fielder Nate Wierzgac (Lee) finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases, while fellow teammate Joseph Burns (Quinnipiac) went 2-for-4 at the dish with one run batted in and one run scored. Florence catcher Robert Jolly (Clemson) finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and Hampton finished 1-for-4.
Kyle Anderson (South Carolina) earned his first win of the season for the RedWolves as his offense gave him four runs of support in the top of the fourth frame. Anderson worked four innings and scattered three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Allan Beer (Bradley) had all three of the Gastonia runs charged against him. Beer recorded two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and would hand the ball over to Zach Callahan (Francis Marion) to record the final out. Callahan finished his night after 2.1 innings of scoreless work, walking one and fanning one.
Gastonia (3-7) starter Michael Catlin (Longwood) suffered his second loss of the season after allowing four runs in 3.2 innings of work for the Grizzlies. Catlin walked two batters, fanned three and allowed five hits. Mason Ward (Kennesaw State) worked the final 2.1 frames for Gastonia, allowing one hit and fanning three batters. Second baseman Jackson Mims (UNC Charlotte) lead the Grizzlies offensive attack with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Catcher Jacob Barbee (Liberty) went a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish and scored a run for Gastonia.
Tom Coletti (Ohio) entered the game for the RedWolves with a 4-3 lead to start the bottom of the ninth frame. Coletti was able to navigate his way through the Grizzlies lineup without any harm as all three-batters that he faced would fly-out. Coletti notched his second save of the season for Head Coach Blake Maxwell and the RedWolves.
