Pioneers Dance-Away with 12-4 Victory at Home against Pilots

ELMIRA, NY - For a second-consecutive night, the Elmira Pioneers used a huge bottom of the first inning to secure a victory at historic Dunn Field in front of a sold-out crowd. The Pioneers scored five runs in the opening frame and five-more in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 12-4 win against the Newark Pilots.
The Pilots would open the scoring in the top of the first inning as they scored a pair of runs against Elmira starter Jackson Tedder. Newark took a 1-0 lead as Peter Battaglia reached first on a throwing error by the Pioneers. The Miscue allowed Tyler Odekirk to score from second base after Elmira committed a second error on the same play.
Tedder would fall-behind against Newark's Will Allocca with the bases loaded. The four-pitch walk allowed the Pilots to up their lead to 2-0 as John Balliet touched home after working his way to third base.
Elmira's offense would quickly get Tedder off the hook after a shaky start to the contest. Pioneers lead-off batter Bryan Seamster drew a five-pitch walk against Newark starter Adam Donovan. Allbry Major followed with a single that allowed Seamster to advance from first to third. Jonathan Crimmin got the Pioneers onto the scoreboard with his run-scoring single.
Trailing 2-1, Chris Davignon knotted the score for the Pioneers with a double that plated Crimmin. A sacrifice fly from Joseph Preziuso gave the Pioneers their first-lead of the contest, 3-2 as Ayrton Schafer scored from third base. Andrew Orzel (RBI single) and Seamster (bases-loaded walk) helped the Pioneers to extend their lead to 5-2.
Tedder found his rhythm in the top of the second inning and would keep the Pilots off of the scoreboard through the fourth inning. In the meantime, Elmira added to its lead offensively by scoring a pair of runs against Newark reliever Jordan Miller in the bottom of the third inning. Blake Shinkle used his run-scoring single to make it 6-2. Three batters later, Crimmin laced a single into right field that scored Shinkle. The inning ended as Seamster was thrown-out at the plate on a laser throw from Newark right fielder Over Torres.
A five-run bottom of the fourth inning would put even-more cushion between the Pioneers and Pilots. The frame would be highlighted by a two-RBI single from Major that plated Preziuso and Shinkle to cap the scoring and make it 12-2.
First-year Head Coach Brian Hill turned to his bullpen in the top of the fifth inning as Shane Barringer took over on the mound for Elmira. Barringer would work 3.1 innings and yield two runs on five hits. The Pilots scored both of their runs in the top of the seventh inning after a walk, a double, and a single from Odekirk, Balliet, and Battaglia. Barringer avoided any further damage for the Pioneers by recording a strikeout, ground-out, and line-out to third base.
With Zach Mann on the mound for the Pilots to start the bottom of the seventh inning, Elmira seemed poised to tack-on more runs after loading the bases with recording a hit. Mann would leave the bases-loaded after getting a strikeout and ground-out to second base to keep the deficit at 12-4.
Reece Maniscalco would close-out the contest on the mound for the Pioneers, tossing the final 1.2 frames needed to preserve the victory. Maniscalco fanned a total of three batters, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. Barringer earned the win after fanning five Newark batters and allowing three walks.
Despite not allowing an earned run through four innings of work, Tedder was handed with the no-decision after fanning six batters and issuing four walks. The Elmira pitching staff tallied 14 strikeouts on the night and issued just seven walks, while the Pilots pitching staff allowed 11 walks on the night and fanned just four batters.
Donovan suffered the loss after recording just two outs in the bottom of the first inning for Newark. He was charged with five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks. Miller allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits through his three innings of relief which included five walks. Four Newark relievers combined to hold Elmira to a single hit and no runs over the final 4.1 innings of the contest.
Major finished the game 2-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs, while Crimmin, Davignon, and Shinkle each tallied two-hit games for Elmira. Seamster and Devon Adams each worked a trio of walks in the game for the Pioneers. Elmira's two through five hitters finished the game 7-for-16 at the plate with five runs scored and three RBIs.
The Pioneers wrap-up their three-game home-stand with a 5:05 PM first-pitch against the Jamestown Jammers at historic Dunn Field. It will be Funday Sunday courtesy of Bobby K Entertainment. Gates open for fans beginning at 4:00 PM.
