Late Errors Doom RedWolves

June 8, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Florence RedWolves News Release

LEXINGTON, S.C. - Zack Files (Florida International) went yard in his first game of the season for the RedWolves, but a pair of late errors allowed two runs to score for Lexington County en route to a 3-1 win for the Blowfish Wednesday night (June 8th) in Coastal Plain League action.

The RedWolves (2-4) will look to see if they can get back into the win column on Thursday night (June 9th) when they head to Savannah, Ga. for a matchup with the Savannah Bananas at 7:00 p.m. Florence will close-out it's four-game road trip on Friday night (June 10th) with a 7:17 p.m. first pitch against the Gastonia Grizzlies.

Luke Humphreys (Morehead State) allowed a run in the bottom of the first inning when he was called for a balk after faking a throw to third base and then to first base without throwing the baseball. Humphreys would settle down for the RedWolves after the miscue and toss four-scoreless frames. He would be handed with a no-decision after exiting the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score tied 1-1. He allowed one run on three hits while walking two batters and fanning four.

Florence would knot the game in the top of the second inning against Lexington County (6-1) Starter Will Crowe (South Carolina). Files drove a pitch to the opposite part of the ballpark and over the fence for his first home run of the season. The run would be the only blemish of the night for Crowe, who also took a no-decision after tossing three innings and allowing one run on two hits. He fanned four batters and issued one walk.

Bryson Conner (Coker), Dre Gleason (Austin Peay), Ryan Kent (Morehead State), and Ryan Sinzenich (Florida Tech) each tallied one hit on the night for the RedWolves. Gleason recorded his first hit of the season for the RedWolves in his second start of the season. Aaron Lesiak (Presbyterian) would relieve Humphreys to start the sixth frame. Lesiak scattered two hits over two innings of work and would do his part to keep the game tied 1-1.

The RedWolves wouldn't have an answer for Lexington County reliever Blake Hamilton in the top of the eighth inning. Hamilton recorded a strikeout and retired Florence in order. The Blowfish would score their first run since the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth frame. The run would be charged to Brett Porter (Florida Tech) who started the inning but would be removed by Head Coach Blake Maxwell before recording an out. The run would be unearned after Porter tried to record an out at third base, but see his throw go down the left field line. Corbin Lamb (Lee) would be brought in looking to keep the Blowfish at bay. Lexington County would add one more run for insurance to take a 3-1 lead going to the ninth inning.

Trevor Bradley (Georgia Gwinnett) earned the save for Lexington County by working a clean top of the ninth inning. By virtue of tossing a scoreless eighth, Hamilton was credited with the win for the Blowfish. Porter was dealt with the loss for the RedWolves, even though both runs charged to him went unearned for the Blowfish. The Blowfish finished the game with five hits and delivered their only run-scoring play with a sacrifice fly from catcher Brandon Johnson (Richmond) in the eighth inning.
