Marlins Slip Past Sharks
June 8, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
It was a close game throughout, but the Wilmington Sharks (3-4) were unable to respond after the Morehead City Marlins (4-3) took the lead in the sixth inning and held on to win 3-2.
The Sharks got on the board first, as Alec Bohm (Wichita State) drove home a run with an RBI double. They held that lead until the third when Morehead City tied the game on a groundout. Wilmington would take the lead back in the fourth, when Mark Donadio (Fordham) executed a perfect hit and run that scored Brett Smith (Bucknell) and give the Sharks a 2-1 lead.
The Marlins went on to tie the game in the fifth and later took the lead in the sixth. The Sharks certainly had their chances. They left 10 runners on base, including two in the ninth. Down to their final out, Smith and Donadio both reached base. After both runners moved up on a passed ball, Grant Koch (West Virginia) flew out to right to end the game.
The win went to Luke Watts (2-0). He tossed six innings, allowed six hits, two runs, two walks and struck out nine. Mike Castellani (2-1) took the loss, pitching one inning and surrendering the go ahead run on one hit and walked two. Tad Ratliff (1) his first save of the season. He threw one inning and allowed no runs, one hit and struck out one.
The Sharks travel to Wilson on Thursday to complete Monday night's game and then play a seven inning game. They'll be back home on Friday to host Wilson.
