RedWolves add pitching and infield depth
May 22, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Florence RedWolves News Release
The Florence RedWolves and first-year head coach Cory Brownsten announce the signing of Michael Kuypers, Grayson McCurry and McLendon Sears ahead of the home opener on Thursday, May 31st against Fayetteville.
Kuypers is a redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher from Mount Saint Mary's. He is a native of Chalfont, Pennsylvania. In his first season for The Mount in 2016, Kuypers appeared in 20 games going 4-2 with three saves, 27 strikeouts and a 4.60 ERA over 45 innings pitched.
"Michael has been nothing but outstanding for The Mount in his couple of years being on the mound for them," Brownsten said. "His Freshman year, he led the team in wins, saves and ERA, I'd say that's pretty good for a Freshman, that should be something to get excited about as a staff and the future of the program. Unfortunately, he battled an injury and sat out the next season."
This season for Mount Saint Mary's, Kuypers has appeared in 11 games going 4-1 with a 3.75 ERA and 24 strikeouts over 36 innings pitched.
"He is now back and as strong as he was in the beginning and having a great year," Brownsten said. "Looking forward to seeing him throw this summer."Â
McCurry is a junior infielder from Mars Hill University. He is a native of Burnsville, North Carolina. This season for the Lions, McCurry has played in 31 games and is batting .223 with three home runs, five doubles and 11 RBIs.
"Grayson has great abilities and just needs to put them all together," Brownsten said. "I know from speaking with coaches that he will come in with things to work at the plate and I will support him throughout the summer and get him to improve each day. He has a ton of pop with the bat. He is a kid that will want to work and get better. He has a great personality and will be a good team guy to have on the team. He will bring a smile to the park everyday."
Sears is freshman infielder from College of Charleston. He is a native of Sumter and a graduate of Wilson Hall High School.
"This boy will come wanting and ready to play," Brownsten said. "After sitting out this season because of transferring to College of Charleston from University of South Carolina, McLendon will see a lot of time up the middle and after talking to past players from South Carolina, he will be a guy that we love in the lineup and around the clubhouse. I see him playing a big role for us this summer and he will only get better as summer goes on, as he is seeing more reps."
The RedWolves will open the 2018 season at home against the Fayetteville SwampDogs on Thursday, May 31, 2018. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will take place at Francis Marion University's Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium.
Host Families Needed
Host families are an important and much-appreciated part of the RedWolves organization. Local families have opened their homes to our players each summer, and their generosity has helped us make the RedWolves a successful part of the Florence community.
Host families provide room and board to a RedWolves player for the entire season. All RedWolves players are college student-athletes and are not paid to play in the Coastal Plain League per NCAA rules.
Becoming a host family can be a rewarding experience. Often players and families share a friendship that last long after the season ends. Also, becoming a host family will earn you FREE SEASON TICKETS!
If you are interested in becoming a host family, please email RedWolves General Manager Barbara Osborne at barbara@florenceredwolves.com or call the RedWolves office at 843-629-0700.
RedWolves announce Summer Kids Baseball Camp dates
The RedWolves will hold their annual Summer Kids Baseball Camp on June 18th through June 21st, 2018. The camp allows kids ages 6 to 15 the unique opportunity to learn from their favorite RedWolves players and coaches on the same field as the RedWolves play.
Each day of camp will run from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Early drop off for working parents will be available starting at 7:30 am. The cost of the camp is $90 per camper.
Each camper will need to bring a glove, bat and cleats. Water will be present while camp is in session, and a trainer will be present at all times during camp.
