Matt Pita Returns To Bananas For 2018

SAVANNAH, Ga - The Savannah Bananas are excited to announce that Matt Pita, a 2017 Banana, will be returning from Virginia Military Institute for a second season. Matt Pita (Jr. INF, VMI) had 20 RBI last summer with a .341 batting average on the season. His most memorable game of 2017 was against the Asheboro Copperheads, where he racked up six RBI, including a grand slam.
He is coming off of a strong season at VMI, batting .390 and slugging .716. He also set a new school record for total bases in a season, with 151 as of May 18th. This past Sunday, Pita was named the SoCon Player of the Week and became the first player in school history to win three conference player of the week awards in the same season.
All eyes will be on Pita in June as he prepares for the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Pita could see his name selected after such an outstanding 2017 summer with the Bananas and a 2018 season with VMI.
Also joining the Bananas this summer are Jordan Merritt and Will Pillsbury from The Citadel.
Jordan Merritt (Jr. RHP, Citadel) struck out 39 in his 14 appearances for The Citadel this past season.
Will Pillsbury (Jr. LHP, Citadel) pitched 23 innings, with 22 strikeouts and only two home runs hit against him.
Fans will have their first chance to meet the 2018 Bananas at Fan Fest on Monday, May 28th. Players will be participating in batting practice and a home run derby and will be available for photos and autographs. Fan Fest is completely free with free food and drinks and open to the public from 5pm-7pm.
