Edenton Steamers News Release
HAMPTON, VA - The Steamers (12-2) scored four times in the sixth inning against the Pilots (7-8-1) when Blaise Fernandez put them ahead for good with a two-run triple and Taylor Braun earned his first victory of the season as the Steamers beat the Pilots 4-2 at War Memorial Stadium.
Right-handed pitcher Taylor Braun (Wright State University) made his first start of the season and second appearance overall for the Steamers against right-handed pitcher Chris Rowley of the Pilots.
The game was scoreless through two innings and the Steamers were held scoreless in the top of the third against Rowley, who only allowed one base runner through his three innings of work.
In the bottom of the third Peninsula cracked the scoreboard against Braun. With one out Zac MacAneney walked and Nick Thompson hit a triple into the right field corner and MacAneney scored from first for a 1-0 Pilots lead. Geno Escalante was the next hitter and he drove in Thompson with an RBI ground out for the 2-0 Pilots lead.
Braun retired the next six Pilots he faced, three in the fourth and three in the fifth, to finish his night. After pitching five innings Braun had allowed the two runs on one hit and five walks; he added two strike outs.
Edenton gave Braun a chance to earn the win in the top of the sixth inning against Rowley. With one out Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) singled. Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman Roberto Duran. The error allowed Camporeale to get to third and Branigan ended up at second. Koby Kraemer (Indiana state University) picked up his third RBI of the season with a single, scoring Camporeale, to make it 2-1 Pilots. Ray Ortega (Manhattan College) then reached on another error by Duran at third base and Branigan scored to tie the game at 2-2. Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) then gave Edenton their first lead of the night with a two-run triple that scored Kraemer and Ortega and pushed the lead to 4-2 Steamers.
Rowley finished his night holding Edenton scoreless in the seventh inning. In total, Rowley pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (none earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out six and left in line for the loss.
DJ Johnson (Mercer University) pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth for Edenton with some help from the Steamer defense. Jason Kanzler (University of Buffalo) tracked down a ball in deep center field with an amazing diving catch and then Escalante put a ball into the right-center field gap and the Steamers executed a perfect 9-4-5 relay to gun down Escalante trying to stretch it into a triple.
Travis Huber (University of Nebraska) came into the game in the bottom of the seventh and allowed a hit and one walk, while striking out three in his 2.1 innings of work. He gave way to closer Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) with runners on first and second and one out. Egan got Duran to pop out to the shortstop and then struck out Tyler Shover to end the ball game.
Braun earned the win, improving to 1-1, Rowley took the loss, falling to 0-1 and Egan earned his league leading seventh save of the season in as many chances.
