SwampDogs Win in Extra Innings

The Fayetteville SwampDogs won their 10th game of the season in grand fashion on Friday night, defeating the Wilmington Sharks 5-to-4 in 10 innings. No fan was happier than Wendy Anderson, who won $15,000 towards a new car courtesy of Stewart Nissan when the Dogs stole home in the third inning. The Steal of a Lifetime promotion worked to perfection for the faithful SwampDogs fan, who celebrated on the field after the inning concluded.Reed Harper (Austin Peay) drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th frame.The Dogs took a 3-to-0 lead in the third inning, where three passed balls by Wilmington's defense led to a three-run outburst for Fayetteville. Brian Bullard (Albany) and Joe Ciamacco (Ohio State) picked up hits in the inning.Wilmington tied things up at three runs apiece with a bases-loaded double in the top of the fifth, and took a 4-to-3 lead in the top of the seventh.Fayetteville entered the bottom of the ninth with their backs against the wall as they trailed by one entering the inning. Mike Tauchman (Bradley) led off the frame with a single to ignite the offense. Sal Giardina (Lynn) followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Tauchman to second and into scoring position, before he moved to third on a groundout. Tyler Ding (Tampa) beat out a ground ball to third base to score Tauchman and tie the game at four.Zach Gawrych (Tampa) ripped a one-out double to the wall in left field to serve as the catalyst in the tenth, as Reed Harper picked up the game-winning base hit after the Dogs loaded the bases.The next SwampDogs home game is Saturday, June 16th, where the City of Fayetteville will help put on the second Fireworks Extravaganza of the season. The first 500 fans will also receive a logo baseball to celebrate Fayetteville's All American City status. The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
