PETERSBURG, Va. - The Morehead City Marlins (5-13) won game two 4-2 and dropped game one 2-0 to the Petersburg Generals (7-8) as part of a double-header Friday evening in Petersburg.
In game two the Marlins jumped on the board early, plating three runs in the first inning. With two outs Sam Ott walked and advanced to third when Robbie Rea reached on an error by the second baseman. Sal Annunziata singled to left field scoring Ott before Brandon Bass drove in his first runs as a Marlin, plating both Annunziata and Rea to make the score 3-0.
In the bottom of the first, Petersburg answered with a run of their own to make the score 3-1. That score held until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Dillon Vitale doubled home Trevor Kenyon to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Marlins.
However, Morehead City got one run back in the fifth frame, when Chad Shannon scored all the way from second base on a wild pitch to extend the Marlins lead to 4-2.
Ben Fuchs (1-0) turned in a solid performance in his first start of the summer, going four innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) with three walks and six strikeouts. Jordan Kutzer pitched two innings of scoreless relief in his Marlins debut, while William Prince earned save number two on the season with a scoreless seventh inning. Rocco Cundari (1-2) suffered the loss, tossing a complete game and allowing four runs (three earned) with nine strikeouts and six hits allowed.
In game one, Rick Teasley (1-1) pitched a complete game shutout for the Generals, giving up just three hits and striking out four. The left-hander out-dueled David Lucroy (0-1), who tossed six innings of his own, allowing two unearned runs on four hits in six innings.
The Generals scored the first run of the game in the second inning, when Jake Yacinich reached on a one-out error. Yacinich proceeded to steal second base and scored with two outs on a single off the bat of Dillon Vitale.
Petersburg increased their lead and scored the final run of the game in the fifth inning when Vitale reached on an error and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout put Vitale on third, Eric Toole drove him in on an infield single to give the Generals a 2-0 lead.
The Marlins continue their Virginia road trip tomorrow as they travel to Hampton to take on the Peninsula Pilots for the third time since Monday evening. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: The shutout in game one marked the third time the Marlins have gone scoreless this season... Lucroy was the third Marlin to pitch at least six innings this season... Kutzer pitched after arriving in Morehead City yesterday... Marlins infielders Geoff DeGroot and Robbie Rea both played left field, with DeGroot playing the first game.
