Forest City Owls News Release
Asheboro, NC- Alex Tomasovich drew a bases loaded walk with nobody out in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Copperheads a 2-1 win over the Owls on Friday night. All three games between Asheboro and Forest City have gone to extra innings this year. The Owls had their chance in the top half of the inning after a leadoff double by Bryan Aanderud. He was caught stealing second base just before Stephen Tarkenton sent a double down the left field line.
The Copperheads also missed opportunities late in the game. Asheboro stranded the winning run at third base in the bottom of the 9th. In the 10th, they ended the inning with runners on first and third base. Then in the 11th, they loaded the bases with two outs and couldn't push the winning run across. Finally, in the 12th they were able to get to Kurt Seiders who was in his third inning of relief.
Both teams started hot scoring a run in the first inning. Nate Chong led off the game with a walk and stole second base. Then, with two outs, Ryan Welke drove a ball up the middle to score Chong and give the Owls a 1-0 lead. The Copperheads countered with an RBI groundout by Jared Hammer in the bottom half of the first.
From there Asheboro starter Zach Bernard settled into a groove. The lefty retired the last 14 batters he faced, holding Forest City off the board in the middle innings. Ryne Slack matched Bernard all the way up until the 7th inning, when he was replaced by Jason Driver. The trio of Driver, Emilio Pagan, and Jake Padgett carried the game to extra innings. Chong finished 0-for-4, bring his eight game hit streak to an end.
Tomorrow, Forest City returns to McNair Field for another game against Thomasville on Saturday night. That night will be Faith Night presented by Gardner-Webb University.
