STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-The Staten Island Yankees lost both games of their doubleheader to the Lowell Spinners on Friday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
In the first game, Staten Island took the early lead on good base running by Josh Smith who came around to score on a bad throw by Lowell catcher Elih Marrero.
Lowell would respond in the third with a two-run home run by Kervin Suarez and then an RBI walk with the bases loaded to Alex Erro made it 3-1.
Staten Island would rally in the ninth with an RBI single by Juan De Leon, but could not bring the tying and go-ahead runs in after getting them on base.
Game two followed a similar script as the Yankees got off to a great start.
Staten Island native Pat DeMarco hit a two-run home run in his first professional home at-bat to make it 2-0. Evan Alexander would drive in a run on a double to make it 3-0 after the first inning.
However, Lowell would respond again with another three-run third inning as Gilberto Jimenez drove in a run with an RBI double and then Cameron Cannon tied the game with a two-run home run.
The Spinners scored on an RBI triple in the fourth inning by Jonathan Diaz to make it 4-3 and Wil Dalton drove in a run in the fifth inning to make it 5-3.
Once again, the Yankees would rally in the seventh as Jake Sanford hit the ball between Suarez's legs at second base to drive in a run and make it 5-4. However, with the tying and winning runs on again they could not score.
The Yankees and Spinners return to Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Saturday night for game three of the series which starts at 7p.m.
