Spinners Sweep Yankees in Doubleheader Friday Night

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Going into Friday night's doubleheader, the Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox, were looking to make it three in a row after defeating the Aberdeen IronBirds the night before and were able to do so, sweeping the Staten Island Yankees, affiliate of the New York Yankees, in the twin-bill by scores of 3-2 and 5-4.
Game Two: Spinners 5, Yankees 4
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Spinners (26-13) sent Yasel Santana to the hill and he went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits. He also picked up six strikeouts and walked four batters.
Santana would pick up a no-decision, however, as reliever Brendan Cellucci - who was making his professional debut - picked up the win even though he pitched just one inning. Cellucci allowed no runs on two hits while also striking out one and walking one.
The Spinners picked up three of their eventual five runs in the third inning, one coming off the bat of Gilberto Jimenez who continued his hot streak - doubling home Kervin Suarez and cutting the Yankees (19-21) lead to 3-1.
In the next at-bat, and on the next pitch to be exact, 2019 second-round selection Cameron Cannon launched his first professional home run over the left field fence - tying the game at three runs apiece.
Lowell took the lead in the following frame when Jonathan Diaz tripled home Wil Dalton. Dalton put the final nail on Staten Island's coffin when he drove in Joe Davis on a sacrifice fly.
Game One: Spinners 3, Yankees 2
In game one, the Yankees took the first lead when Josh Smith scored on an errant throw by Spinners' catcher Elih Marrero.
Lowell got the run back and more when Suarez hit his first home run of the season to right-center field, scoring Ricardo Cubillan - giving the Spinners a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Alex Erro walked Marrero home to make it 3-1.
Yusniel Padron-Artilles got the start in game one and he picked up the win, his fifth of the season with the Spinners. Padron-Artilles went six strong, allowing one run (unearned) on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Osvaldo De La Rosa picked up the save - his third of 2019 - in the victory.
The Spinners are back in action on Saturday night, first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
