Staten Island Beats Vermont 3-1 In Series Finale

Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Isaias Tejeda and Luis Torrens each had an RBI double, while three Staten Island pitchers limited the Vermont to just three hits as the Yankees beat the Lake Monsters 3-1 in the finale of a three-game New York-Penn League series at historic Centennial Field on Sunday evening.
Tejeda had his RBI double in the first inning with two outs to plate Conneor Spencer, who had reached base on a one-out double. The run was just the second allowed by Vermont starter Dillon Overton in his four starts since joining the Lake Monsters. Overton (0-1) allowed the one run on three hits with five strikeouts over five innings to take the loss. Relievers Brett Graves tossed three scoreless innings, while Daniel Gossett retired all six batters he faced in two innings of work.
But while Vermont pitching was holding the Yankees to just the one run, the Lake Monstes offense continued to struggle in the series. After being held hitless over the final five innings in Friday's 3-1 win, Vermont had just two hits on Saturday in a 5-0 loss to Staten Island and just two hits on Sunday over the first eight innings. Yankee starter David Pallidano (6-5) allowed one hit with three walks and two strikeouts over five innings to earn the win, while reliever Joseph Harvey one hit and two strikeouts over three scoreless innings.
The Yankees got a couple of insurance runs in the ninth on a Chris Breen RBI single and Torrens RBI double off of Corey Walter for a 3-0 lead. Vermont finally snapped a 22-inning scoreless streak in the bottom of the ninth as Scott Masik led off with a line drive single to center and advanced around to third when the ball got past centerfielder Devyn Bolasky for a two-base error before scoring an unearned run on a Ben McQuown RBI groundout to avoid a second straight shutout.
The loss dropped Vermont to 29-39 overall, including five losses in their last six home games. The Lake Monsters, who have won six of their last eight road games, head out on a six-game roadtrip beginning at Tri-City on Monday night. After three games at both Tri-City and Staten Island, Vermont will return home to Centennial Field for the final two games of the season against the ValleyCats on August 31st and September 1st at 5:05 pm.
