Tigers Beat up on Renegades

Norwich, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (36-32) defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades (44-24) by the final score of 8-2 at Dodd Stadium Sunday evening. RF Ben Verlander (2-4) put the first runs on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a two run double that gave the Tigers a 2-0. The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

After a night in which the Tigers bats were cold, the bats came to life Sunday. The Tigers tallied eight runs on 10 hits in the win. Renegades RHP Hunter Wood (3-4) retired the first 11 Tigers batters and then was rattled for four runs in the fourth inning. 1B Will Maddox (1-5) hit a two run single in the sixth inning that put Connecticut well ahead 8-0. 2B Brett Pirtle (2-4), C Tim Remes (2-3) and SS Garrett Mattlage (1-4) each chipped in with RBI singles.

RHP Spencer Turnbull pitched three shutout innings for the Tigers while only giving up one hit. Turnbull retired the final eight batters he faced. RHP Josh Heddinger (1-2) picked up his first professional victory. Heddinger relieved Turnbull and pitched two scoreless innings while giving up one hit and struck out one batter. The Tigers used four pitchers that held the Renegades to runs on six hits. The Tigers defense was stellar today as they did not commit an error.

The Tigers and Lowell Spinners (Red Sox) begin a three-game series tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium. Tigers RHP Austin Pritcher (6-2, 4.02) is slated to face Spinners RHP Reed Reilly (0-1, 4.75). Tomorrow is Kids Eat Free presented by US Foods & The Day. Each child ticket (12 & under) will receive a voucher redeemable for a hot dog, bag of chips, bottle of water, and an apple!
