Tonight's game between the Spikes and Muckdogs starts a three-game series between the two teams, who have met 60 times over the past six years. Batavia holds a 33-27 all-time series lead, and a 17-12 lead in games played at Dwyer Stadium.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes remained unbeaten at home this season as they beat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 6-5 last night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Samuel Gonzalez led the way with two hits and two runs batted in. Yhonathan Barrios added two RBI and stole two bases as well. Joan Montero got the win in relief, and struck out two batters in two innings, while Pat Ludwig got the save. With the win, the Spikes took sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division.
-SPIKES TURN TO BURNETTE ON MOUND: Right-hander Jake Burnette, the Pirates' seventh-round draft pick in 2011, gets the ball for his second start of the year tonight. Burnette took the loss in his first outing of the year, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over three innings. The Buford, GA native led Buford High to a Georgia state high school baseball title last spring before signing with the Pirates and making one single-inning appearance in the GCL.
-MELLING IS MUCKDOGS' MOUND MAN TONIGHT: Right-hander Tyler Melling is slated to start for the Muckdogs tonight. Melling was the Cardinals' 39th-round choice in the 2011 draft, and made his pro debut for the Cardinals' Gulf Coast League affiliate last year. The Miami (OH) University product led the GCL with seven holds in relief and ranked second among relievers in fewest baserunners allowed per nine innings at 8.31.
-CARVAJAL CARVING OUT PLACE ON LEADERBOARD: Spikes infielder Jodaneli Carvajal is now sixth in the New York-Penn League in batting average (.455) and third in on-base percentage (.538).
