BURLINGTON, VT --- Wilfredo Solano and Chad Lewis both had RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from a one-run deficit for a 3-2 victory over the Connecticut Tigers in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.
John Wooten led off the ninth with a walk and advanced around to third base as Sam Roberts reached first on first baseman Juaner Aguasvivas' throwing error on Roberts sacrifice bunt. Solano followed with a line drive single to right field to score Wooten with the tying run. After fouling off two bunt attempts, Phil Pohl put down a successful sac bunt and reached first on pitcher Angel Nesbitt's fielding error to load the bases with no outs. Chad Lewis then grounded a 1-0 pitch from Nesbitt into leftfield scoring pinch runner Michael Fabiaschi with the winning run.
The first six innings of the game belonged to the starting pitchers as Vermont's Andres Avila allowed just one unearned run on four hits with no walks and nine ÃÂ strikeouts, while Connecticut's Edgar De La Rosa gave up one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Kris Hall, who joined the Lake Monsters earlier in the day from the Arizona League Athletics, struckout four in two perfect innings of relief for the win.
Solano was 3-for-4 for the Lake Monsters, while Brett Vertigan went 2-for-4 in his debut with Vermont after being taken in the 10th round of the 2012 draft out of UC-Santa Barbara by the Athletics. Danry Vasquez was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Connecticut (2-6).
Vermont (5-3) has won three straight games and host the Tigers again on Tuesday in the second of a three-game series between the two teams at Centennial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm on Stowe Mountain Resort Night with the first 2,000 fans receiving a Free Attractions Activity Voucher to Stowe Mountain Resort.
