Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Brian Pointer homered, tied the game on a double and scored the winning run as Williamsport beat Mahoning Valley 3-2 for their first road win of the year.
Pointer's homer was blasted into the Scrappers' bullpen beyond the right field fence. It was Williamsport's first road round-tripper of the year.
The home run was Pointer's eighth overall this year as he led the Lakewood BlueClaws with seven home runs earlier this year before he was sent down to Williamsport.
He finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Geoff Broussard picked up his first win after 2.1 sterling innings of relief. After walking the first batter he faced, Broussard retired seven in a row, striking out four.
Jeb Stefan came on in the ninth and allowed a pair of baserunners. But Stefan got Charlie Valerio to ground out to record his first save of the year.
Hoby Milner started the game for the Cutters and allowed the first run of the game in the third inning. With Jairo Kelly at third, Valerio slapped an infield single to make it 1-0.
He finished with 2.2 IP, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts before giving way to Jordan Guth.
With Guth pitching, Mahoning Valley doubled their lead in the fourth when Erik Gonzalez scored Aaron Siliga on an infield chop off.
Pointer's homer cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, before Williamsport took the lead in the seventh. Pointer doubled home Larry Greene with a fly ball to the track in left, before Mitch Walding hit a grounder up the middle to score Pointer.
Cameron Perkins made his first start at first base and made a diving play to save a leadoff hit in the eighth. Perkins dove to his left, got up on his feet and stepped on the bag to retire Siliga.
The Cutters improve to 5-3 and sit in second place in the division, tied with Auburn.
