Lake Monsters Fight Back for 3-2 Win

BURLINGTON, VT-The Vermont Lake Monsters (5-5) scored two runs in the bottom of the 9th to earn a 3-2 walk-off win over the Connecticut Tigers (2-6) in the opening game of a three-game series at Centennial Field on Monday.

Connecticut scored a run in the second inning on an RBI single by C Benett Pickar (1-3). LF Danry Vasquez (2-3) singled and moved to second base when Vermont RHP Andres Avilia threw wide of first base on a pickoff attempt. Pickar lined a single to center field to plate Vasquez and Connecticut had a 1-0 lead.

Vermont tied the game in the fourth inning. 2B Sam Roberts (0-2) earned a one-out walk and went to third base on a single by SS Wilfredo Solano (3-4). C Phil Pohl (0-2) laid down a sacrifice bunt to first base, scoring Roberts to tie the score at 1-1.

In the seventh inning DH Zach Kirksey (1-4) led off with a single and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Pickar. Kirksey moved to third base on a wild pitch by former Connecticut Tiger Drew Gagnier. CF Patrick Smith (0-3) hit an RBI groundout to score Kirksey and make it 2-1.

In the ninth inning RF John Wooten (0-3) led off with a walk. He went to second base when Roberts reached on an error. SS Wilfredo Solano (3-4) singled to score Wooten and tie the game at 2-2. Pohl reached on an error to load the bases and 3B Chad Lewis (1-4) singled into left field to drive home the winning run.

The Tigers and Lake Monsters play game two of their series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Endrys Briceno (0-1, 19.64) gets the start for Connecticut against LHP Brent Powers (0-0, 0.00) for Vermont. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and online at www.cttigers.com.
