-SPIKES HIT HALFWAY MARK AGAINST CYCLONES TONIGHT: The State College Spikes finish off the first half of the 2011 season as they face the Brooklyn Cyclones to conclude a three-game series tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. After an off day tomorrow, the Spikes will head to Troy, NY for three games against the Tri-City ValleyCats. Brooklyn leads the all-time series between the two teams, 12-5, and has taken 6 of 8 meetings in State College.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes were strong in every phase of the game on Sunday evening, getting Alex Dickerson's first career home run, great pitching and phenomenal defense in a 5-1 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Dickerson, the Pittsburgh Pirates' third-round pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, drove an 0-2 pitch over the right field wall off of Brooklyn reliever Eric Beaulac to give State College a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. Shortstop Ashley Ponce had a hand in eight of the first 12 outs of the game. Josh Poytress earned his first professional victory in relief for the Spikes.
-KINGHAM ON THE HILL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Nick Kingham makes his eighth start of the season for the Spikes, and his second against a team from New York City. Kingham earned his first professional victory with five scoreless innings against the Staten Island Yankees on July 15. Last time out, the Las Vegas, NV native and 2010 fourth-round draft pick allowed one run on four hits over five innings in a no-decision against Mahoning Valley.
-CYCLONES SEND VAZQUEZ TO MOUND: Left-hander Carlos Vazquez gets the start for Brooklyn tonight. Vazquez is in his fourth year in the Mets organization, and began the 2011 season in the Mexican League, where he made seven relief appearances for Oaxaca. The 19-year-old left-hander went 4-2 with three saves and a 4.72 ERA in 11 outings for the GCL Mets last year. Vazquez allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings against Aberdeen last time out.
