Cecchini Named NYPL Player of the Week
July 25, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced today that third baseman Garin Cecchini has been named the New York-Penn League Player of the Week for the week ending July 24.
The Red Sox fourth round selection in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, Cecchini is in his first professional season with the Spinners in 2011.
Over the past week, Cecchini appeared in seven of the Spinners eight games, posting a triple slash line of .571/.640/.905, recording 12 hits in his 21 at-bats with one home run, four doubles and seven RBI. Cecchini also stole two bases and scored nine runs.
After a slow start to the 2011 season, Cecchini was batting just .200 through the season's first month. He has been on a tear of late however, raising his average to .298 as of July 23, currently riding a nine-game hitting streak.
Unfortunately for Cecchini, his 2011 season is most likely over, as he was hit-by-a-pitch in his first at-bat July 23, breaking his wrist. Currently immobilized by a hard cast just above the elbow, the injury typically takes 4-to-6 weeks to heal.
If Cecchini's season is in fact over, he will finish his first season as a professional with a .298 average, 12 doubles, a triple, three home runs, 23 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Cecchini showed impressive plate disciple, walking 17 times, while striking out 19, finishing with a .898 OPS.
Cecchini becomes the second Spinner to be honored as a Player of the Week, joining fellow third baseman Travis Shaw. Shaw was honored for the week ending July 3, the first Spinner to earn the league honor since Wilfred Pichardo in 2009.
The Spinners are off Tuesday, the second scheduled off-day of the NYPL schedule, as they travel to Mahoning Valley (OH) for the start of a six-game road-trip Wednesday. The team returns to LeLacheur Park Tuesday, August 2 for a five-game home stand with great tickets still available. For more information on ticket availability, visit www.LowellSpinners.com .
