-SPIKES FINISH UP MINI-SERIES IN MAHONING VALLEY: The State College Spikes face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the second game of a two-game series at Eastwood Field tonight. State College will try and snap a season-long four-game skid tonight. The Spikes went 6-6 during a streak of 12 straight out-of-division prior to game one against the Scrappers. Mahoning Valley holds the all-time series lead, 37-30, and an 23-11 edge in games at Eastwood Field.

-LAST GAME: Barrett Barnes delivered his fourth home run of the season and the Spikes battled back to tie the game in the eighth inning, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers took a 7-3 win at Eastwood Field last night. Barnes homered in the fifth inning for the Spikes first run and would have had two more RBIs if not for a controversial interference call in the eighth that took a couple runs off the board. The Spikes did bounce back to make it 3-3 on D.J. Crumlich's two-run single, but Mahoning Valley scored four in the bottom half get the victory.

-HEREDIA HITS HILL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Luis Heredia gets the start for State College on the mound this evening. The 17-year-old phenom was rated as the fifth-best prospect in the Pirates system prior to the season by Baseball America, and has lived up to the billing. Heredia has yielded just three earned runs in 24 innings of work for the best ERA in the Pirates organization and the third-best in the NYPL. Heredia earned his first Spikes win last time out on Friday.

-MARTIN MAKES MOUND START FOR SCRAPPERS: Right-hander Josh Martin is slated to start for Mahoning Valley tonight. Martin, the 10th-round draft pick of the Indians in 2012 out of Samford, has earned wins in each of his last three appearances, including two in a starting role. The Enterprise, AL native has allowed two earned runs over five innings in each of his last two outings. Martin has also struck out 20 batters and walked just four in 20 1/3 innings this year.

-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Jason Creasy, Clay Holmes, Luis Heredia, Jake Burnette and Joely Rodriguez each have at least one start of five innings or more with one earned run or less this year. Holmes, Heredia and Rodriguez hold two of the the top three earned run averages in the Pittsburgh Pirates' system, and the team's 3.16 ERA is tops in the organization.

-SPIKE MARKS: Holmes is fourth in ERA at 1.14, and his 146 opponents' batting average is 2nd in the league behind only Brooklyn's Luis Mateo...Barrett Barnes is tied for the NYPL lead in times hit by pitch with 6, and his ratio of one homer every 21.25 at-bats is fourth-best in the league...Rodriguez has allowed 8.69 baserunners per 9 IP and is fifth among NYPL starters in that stat
