Tigers Come Back to Earn the Sweep

NORWICH- Connecticut Tigers (12-18) 3B Zach Kirksey went 3-4 with three singles and two RBIs Wednesday afternoon to lead his team to a 4-1 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters (16-14) in front of 2060 fans on Camp Day at Dodd Stadium. RHP Edgar De La Rosa and RHP Hunter Scantling combined for 10 Vermont strikeouts.

The two-game sweep marked Connecticut's first series sweep of the season. The Tigers have won four of five contests with Vermont in the month of July and seven of their last nine games.

The Tigers scored a run in the fourth inning. SS Jared Reaves (1-3) reached base on a one-out single to right field. DH Danry Vasquez (0-3) moved Reaves to second base on a ground out to the shortstop. Kirksey hit an RBI line drive single to right field to score Reaves for a 1-0 lead.

Vermont responded with a run of its own in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. LF Austin Booker (1-2) reached third base on his first triple of the season and CF Brett Vertigan (2-4) knocked him in on an RBI single to the right fielder.

Connecticut regained the lead in the seventh inning. SS Devon Travis (2-3) hit a two-out single to start the rally. RF Patrick Smith (1-3) followed with a single and Travis scored on a throwing error by Vermont's right fielder. Another run crossed the plate on an RBI single by 2B Jordan Dean (1-3) to give the Tigers a 3-1 advantage.

Two runs in the eighth inning cushioned the Tigers lead. Back-to-back walks by Reaves and Vasquez with two outs started the offense. Kirksey followed with his second RBI and third single of the game to score both runners, widening Connecticut's lead to 4-1.

The Tigers head to LeLaucher Park on Thursday to face the Lowell Spinners at 7:05 p.m. RHP Endrys Briceno (1-2 7.66) is taking the mound for the Tigers looking to win his second straight start.
