Auburn Doubledays News Release

AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (18-10) came back from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh, but could never regain the lead they once held, eventually falling in 11 innings to the Williamsport Crosscutters (11-18) on Tuesday night, 6-5. The Doubledays finished the night 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

In the top of the 11th RF Yan Carlos Olmo smacked a single to right field with two outs in the inning. He scored from first when CF Brian Pointer followed that up with a triple off the wall in right. The run came against RHP Travis Henke (3-1) who got charged with his first loss of the year. The run given up by Henke was the first he has allowed since June 22, in a game that also happened to be against the Crosscutters.

Auburn knotted the game in the seventh thanks to four hits in the inning. With one out CF Wes Schill singled on a ground ball to right. Two batters later 1B Shawn Pleffner doubled on a deep fly ball to center field, which allowed Schill to score from first and bring the Doubledays within one. Pleffner then scored from second on a single to right by 3B Carlos Lopez. Lopez finished the night 2-5 with two RBI.

After each team plated one run in each of the first two innings, Auburn took a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Left fielder Estarlin Martinez, who lead off the second inning with his second homerun of the season, lead off the fourth with a line drive double to right. He advanced to third on a fly out to right, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right by SS James Brooks.

The one Auburn run was quickly answered by two in the next frame for Williamsport. With runners on the corners and one out, 1B Cameron Perkins sent a fly ball over the head of CF Wes Schill, clearing the bases and giving Perkins his second of three hits on the night. The fifth Williamsport run came in the top of the seventh when SS Roman Quinn leadoff the inning with a triple, and then scored on a single to right by Perkins.

RHP Chris Nichols (1-0) pitched the eighth, ninth, and tenth for the Crosscutters to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed just two hits over those three innings without giving up a run. RHP Pedro Encarnacion got the start for Auburn and lasted six innings, surrendering four earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four.

The Doubledays wrap up their two game series with the Crosscutters on Wednesday July 18. Auburn will send LHP Brett Mooneyham (0-0) to the mound for his third start of the year. He will square off against RHP Ramon Oviedo (0-1) for Williamsport. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. All Wednesdays are "Make-A-Wish" Wednesdays presented by Sugarman Law firm. Ticket discounts for the game can be found online at Facebook and Twitter on Wednesday as part of the Cyber Wednesday promotion.
