-SPIKES UP EARLY FOR MORNING MATCHUP: The State College Spikes play the first of two morning games this year as they take on the team with the New York-Penn League's best record, the Staten Island Yankees, in the middle game of a three-game series today at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Spikes will look for their first win against the Yankees in Staten Island since 2007. Staten Island leads the all-time series, 12-4.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes were felled by a 16-hit attack from the Staten Island Yankees that included two home runs, helping the Yankees to a 9-2 victory over the Spikes on Wednesday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. State College left just three baserunners stranded, but could not overcome Staten Island's offensive outburst. The Spikes scored their first run in the fourth inning after Kirk Singer reached base on an infield single and Chris Lashmet followed with a double to cut the deficit to 2-1. Justin Bencsko, Alex Fuselier, and Ashley Ponce also had hits for State College. The two teams also endured a one-hour rain delay.
-DODSON GETS REHAB START: Left-hander Zack Dodson gets the ball for State College today. Dodson is making his return to the Spikes on a Minor League rehab assignment from Single-A West Virginia after three starts for the Gulf Coast League Pirates. In his last outing on July 9, the Natalia, TX native went four innings and allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out three.
-YANKEES SEND MITCHELL TO MOUND: Staten Island right-hander Bryan Mitchell takes to the mound this morning for his sixth start of the year. Mitchell has not allowed more than three earned runs in any start this year, but reached that mark over two innings in his last home appearance on June 17. The 16th-round draft pick of the Yankees in 2009 is a native of Reidsville, NC, and passed up a scholarship to North Carolina in order to play pro ball.
