-SPIKES START BACK HALF OF HOMESTAND TONIGHT: The State College Spikes look to start a new winning streak tonight as they face the Aberdeen IronBirds in the first game of a three-game set. The Spikes halted a five-game losing streak last night by taking the final game of a three-game series from the Hudson Valley Renegades, and now face the team in the McNamara Division cellar after taking on the McNamara Division leaders over the last three nights. The IronBirds hold the all-time series lead, 11-6, and a 5-4 edge in games played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: Joely Rodriguez combined with Orlando Castro and Kyle Haynes to shut out the Hudson Valley Renegades on four hits, and Derek Trent scored the game's only run in the seventh inning as the Spikes took a 1-0 victory on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Rodriguez faced one batter over the minimum during five three-hit innings. The left-hander also picked three runners off of first base during the course of his outing.
-SAMPSON LOOKS FOR STRONG START TONIGHT: RIght-hander Adrian Sampson makes his fifth start of the year, and seventh overall appearance, for State College this evening. Sampson, the Pirates' 2012 fifth-round draft choice out of Bellevue (WA) Community College, made his best outing as a professional last time out. Sampson threw five shutout innings against Lowell in game one of a Sunday doubleheader, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four.
-RIVERA GETS MOUND CALL FOR IRONBIRDS: Left-hander Jorge Rivera is slated to start for the IronBirds tonight. Rivera, who signed with the Orioles as a non-drafted free agent in 2008, is coming off of the Disabled List today after being out since late June. Rivera has made just two starts for Aberdeen this year. The southpaw was tied for second in the league in both wins (4) and saves (2) last year in with the Gulf Coast League Orioles.
-SPIKES WELCOME NEW FACES TO ROSTER: The Spikes were busy with transactions on Wednesday, with Emmanuel De Leon earning promotion to Single-A West Virginia and Barrett Barnes going to the DL. In their places, the Spikes welcome College World Series hero Jimmy Rider, first baseman/outfielder Jesus Vasquez and 2011 Spikes pitcher Kevin Kleis from the GCL Pirates.
-SPIKE MARKS: Tyler Gaffney won the NYPL Player of the Week Award for July 23-29...Gaffney's 2 HBP last Friday set a Spikes single-season record, which has since risen to 12 (in just 22 games)...The previous record of 9 was co-held by Brian Friday (2007) and Justin Byler (2009)...Gaffney also tied the club's single-game record of 4 runs last Friday vs. Connecticut
