Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- ÃÂ Addison Russell went 4-for-5 with an RBI triple, John Wooten 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and Tyler Vail allowed one run with seven strikeouts over six innings for the victory as the Vermont Lake Monsters defeated the Batavia Muckdogs 7-3 in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.
The Lake Monsters pounded out a season-high 16 hits on the night, the most hits by a Vermont team in a home game at Centennial in over 10 years. Five of the 16 hits came in the fifth inning as Vermont scored three times to take a 5-1 lead. Brett Vertigan got the rally started with a one-out double and scored on a John Wooten line drive home run to left field. The home run was fourth of the year for Wooten and just the fourth Lake Monsters home run at Centennial this season.
ÃÂ
Vermont put together three straight singles after the Wooten home run to load the bases and scored the third run of the inning on a Reynaldo Mateo two-out walk. The Muckdogs cut the deficit in half in the seventh on a David Popkins two-run double and then loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Austin House came on to get the last out of the inning and keep the Lake Monsters lead at 5-3.
Austin Booker led off the bottom of the eighth with a line drive double down the rightfield line and Russell followed with a line drive triple into the rightfield corner. Russell, who is now 8-for-13 in three games since being promoted to Vermont, then scored on a Vertigan sacrifice fly for a 7-3 Lake Monsters lead. House retired Batavia in order in the ninth to record his fourth save of the season.
Vail (1-2) allowed the one run on five hits with no walks to go along with the seven strikeouts in six innings for his first win of the season. It marked the first time in 16 career starts for Vermont the past two years that Vail has pitched at least six innings and struckout at least seven batters. The victory for Vail also marked just the third win of the season for a Lake Monsters starting pitcher and the first since July 3rd at Connecticut.
Popkins had two hits, including the two-run double, and Jonathan Keener scored two runs for the Muckdogs. Starter Ben O'Shea (1-2) was touched for five runs (four earned on 12 hits over 4.1 innings to take the loss for Batavia (24-21). Wilfredo Solano was 3-for-3 for the Lake Monsters, while Jacob Tanis added two hits as Vermont batters recorded four multi-hit games.ÃÂ
The series continues on Sunday evening as the Lake Monsters host Batavia at Centennial Field beginning at 6:05 pm. Sunday is Champ's Birthday and fans can also "Have A Catch" on the field following the game. The homestand concludes on Monday at 7:05 pm with a Derek Norris bobblehead giveaway.
