Auburn Doubledays News Release
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (28-16) used a four-run eighth inning on Friday to come back and defeat the Staten Island Yankees (15-29), 6-4, in front of 3,894 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The win gave Auburn a three-game sweep of the Yankees, the team's fifth series sweep of the summer.
Down 4-2 entering the eighth, RF Estarlin Martinez began a one-out rally by hitting a single up the middle. That was followed by another single up the middle by CF Wander Ramos, and then a walk issued to 2B Tony Renda loaded the bases. First baseman Carlos Lopez was able to drive Martinez in for the first run of the inning on a groundout to second, putting two in scoring position with two outs. Ramos came home from third on a wild pitch by LHP James Pazos (1-2), knotting the game at four. Third baseman Kayyan Norfork then drove in Renda for what turned out to be the winning run on a double to right, and Norfork scored the insurance run on a single from SS Wes Schill.
The four-run eighth for the Doubledays followed a three-run seventh for Staten Island. The Yankees sent eight batters to the plate in the seventh, and the first five all reached base. The inning began with a single by 2B Jose Rosario, and that was followed by a fielding error from Schill, which allowed LF Taylor Dugas to get aboard. Shortstop Claudio Custodio then brought both runners home with a triple to deep right, giving the Yankees their second lead of the game. Custodio was able to score from third on a single up the middle by CF Ravel Santana, providing Staten Island with the two-run cushion it could not hold.
The Yankees had taken the initial 1-0 lead in the fourth when a leadoff walk to catcher Peter O'Brien came back to bite the Doubledays, as O'Brien scored from third on an RBI single off the bat of 3B Matt Duran. Auburn tied the score at one in the sixth thanks to a leadoff double from LF Mike McQuillan, who then stole third and scored on a single by Ramos. The Doubledays went ahead 2-1 in the top of the seventh when Norfork scored on an RBI groundout to second by starting catcher Andruth Ramirez.
Despite allowing all three of Staten Island's seventh-inning runs, RHP Robert Benincasa (1-0) picked up the win for Auburn. RHP Ivan Pineyro started the game and went six full innings allowing one run on seven hits. RHP Derek Self came in to pitch the ninth and record his eighth save of the summer. Getting tagged with the loss for the Yankees was Pazos, who blew his first save opportunity of the summer.
The Doubledays now head across the bridge to Brooklyn to begin a three game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones on Saturday, August 4. Auburn will send LHP Blake Monar (2-3) to the mound for his eighth start of the year. He will square off against RHP Hansel Robles (2-1) for the Cyclones. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.
