-SPIKES FACE FAMILIAR FOE IN SCRAPPERS: The State College Spikes enter a new three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tonight, though the scene shifts to Eastwood Field. Mahoning Valley leads the all-time series, 25-22. The Spikes took a pair of games to sweep the Scrappers earlier this season at Eastwood Field.
-LAST GAME: Zack Von Rosenberg started the game with three shutout innings, but Mahoning Valley had enough offense to top State College, 4-1, last night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Von Rosenberg yielded just three hits and struck out three during his tenure on the mound, leaving with the game still scoreless. The Scrappers then broke through with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, with both scoring on a Brooks Pounders wild pitch.
-SPIKES SEND DODSON TO HILL: Left-hander Zack Dodson gets the ball for the Spikes tonight. Dodson has faced Mahoning Valley twice already this season, but both of his previous appearances came in a relief role. Last time out, the Natalia, TX native and 2009 fourth-round pick of the Pirates allowed three runs in four innings against Jamestown on Thursday.
-SCRAPPERS RIDE RAYL IN NEW SERIES: Mahoning Valley cycles through a six-man rotation with left-hander Mike Rayl going to the mound for his 12th start of the year. Rayl is 0-1 but has a 2.70 ERA in his two starts against the Spikes this season. The Lake Worth, FL native has a 4.09 ERA at home as opposed to a 1.78 road ERA in 2010.
-WALDRON FIRING BLANKS FOR SPIKES: Tyler Waldron stretched his streak of no-hit innings to eight on Sunday night before allowing a single to Carlos Moncrief in the third inning. Waldron has also thrown 11 straight shutout frames over his last three starts.
-CURRY STILL SPICING UP OFFENSE: Matt Curry is second in the New York-Penn League with a .415 on-base percentage, and his five home runs are tied for the team lead.
