State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES START ROAD TRIP WITH D-DAYS: The State College Spikes begin a four-game road trip with the first game of a two-game set against the Auburn Doubledays tonight at Falcon Park. The Spikes are 4-2 against the Doubledays this year, having taken both three-game series between the two teams. Auburn leads the all-time series, 20-16.

-LAST NIGHT: Phil Dumatrait became the second Pittsburgh Pirates player to make a rehab appearance in State College, but took the loss as the Spikes dropped a 4-3 decision to the Batavia Muckdogs at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park last night. Dumatrait allowed all four Batavia runs, with just two earned over his five innings of work. The Pirates left-hander also struck out five. Brock Holt produced three hits in a game for the second time this year, and became the second Spikes to double twice in one game in 2009.

-SPIKES TO START BLACK: Right-hander Victor Black gets the ball tonight for State College. The supplemental first-round draft choice out of Dallas Baptist University is making his second start and sixth overall appearance. In his last start, Black went three innings and allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out five against Batavia on July 9. This is Black's first career appearance against Auburn.

-AUBURN GOES WITH GRACEY: Right-hander Scott Gracey is the starter tonight for Auburn. Gracey has faced the Spikes twice already on the year, with a 1-1 record in the two outings. After allowing six runs in 4 2/3 innings at Auburn on June 26, Gracey beat the Spikes with six innings of one-run ball on July 2 at State College. The Blue Jays 15th-round draft pick in 2008, Gracey is making his eighth start of the year.

-SPIKES UNDERGO A FEW CHANGES: State College saw one player come back to the fold and said goodbye to another in the past two days. Right-handed pitcher Owen Brolsma comes back to State College for a second stint with the Spikes after going 0-2 with 2 saves and a 2.92 ERA for Single-A West Virginia. Infielder Matt Payne was released today by the Pirates organization after hitting .129 in 10 games for the Spikes in 2009.
