Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

ONEONTA, NY --- Both Vermont's J.P. Ramirez and Oneonta's John Murrian had four hits, including three for extra-bases, but it was Murrian's Tigers that came out on top with a 5-4 victory over the Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Monday night at Damaschke Field.

Murrian went 4-for-4 with one run, two doubles, a homer and three RBI, including a two-run double in the first inning to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Ramirez was 4-for-5 with a run, two doubles and a two-run triple that tied the game in the third inning as Vermont scored three times to take a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers quickly tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the third off Lake Monsters starter Graham Hicks as Murrian smacked his second home run of the season, but Vermont just as quickly regained the lead in the fourth when Adam Amar led off the inning with his first home run of the season.

Oneonta responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Carmelo Jaime two-out RBI single to score Wade Gaynor, who had led off the inning with a double. The Tigers plated the eventual winning run in the sixth as Gaynor led off with a walk, moved to third on a Luis Palacios single and scored on a Jaime sacrifice fly for a 5-4 Oneonta lead.

Vermont got a runner to second with two outs in the seventh and one out in the eighth, but were unable to tie the game either inning. The Lake Monsters used three singles in the ninth inning to load the bases with one out, but Justin Bloxom grounded into a forceout at home and Amar popped out to end the game.

Kevan Hess (2-0) tossed two innings of scoreless relief for the win and Kenny Faulk recorded the final two outs for his seventh save as Oneonta (21-14) increased its Stedler Division lead over both Vermont (19-18) and Lowell (19-18) to three games.

Hicks (2-3) allowed five runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings for the loss, while J.J. Sferra was 2-for-5 with one run scored. Destin Hood, Washington's 2008 second-round draft pick who was promoted to Vermont from the Gulf Coast League on Monday, went 2-for-4 with an RBI in his Lake Monsters debut.

The Lake Monsters and Tigers will play again at Oneonta on Tuesday before the four-game series moves to historic Centennial Field for 7:05 p.m. games on Wednesday and Thursday.
