Iowa Chops News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars and the Rochester Americans faced each other for the second and final time this regular season on Tuesday evening at Wells Fargo Arena. Despite entering the third period with a one-goal lead, the Stars suffered a 5-4 shootout loss to the visiting Americans.

Rochester laid claim to an early 1-0 lead just 5:03 into the first period. Mark Mancari gave the Americans the lead when he collected a rebound off a Marek Zagrapan shot that Iowa Stars netminder Dan Ellis was unable to contain. Iowa evened the score at one goal apiece when Janos Vas notched his sixth goal of the season. Marty Wilford and Junior Lessard collected the assists on the power-play goal with 4:54 left in the period.

Jamie Johnson staked the Stars to a 2-1 lead early into the second period. Just :04 seconds into a five minute, score-at-will major power-play, Johnson registered his first AHL goal of the season. Vas and Wilford garnered the assists on the goal that came at 2:09 of the middle stanza. Just over two minutes later Yared Hagos gave Iowa a 3-1 lead when he redirected a Mario Scalzo shot from the left point. Mark Ardelan had the other assist on the power-play goal. Granted another power-play to make it a five-on-three, Iowa was unable to score in that situation but did score three seconds after the five-on-three expired. Marty Wilford fired a shot that broke-off Craig Anderson's shoulder and rolled into the net for a five-on-four power-play goal. Ardelan picked-up his second assist of the game, while Vojtech Polak was credited with the second helper.

Greg Jacina potted an even-strength goal to cut Iowa's lead to 4-2 midway through the period. Taking a feed from Mike Ryan, Mark Mancari tipped-home a pass that eluded Ellis on his backside. The Amerks first power-play goal came with 1:13 left in the period. Iowa out-shot Rochester 17 to eight in the second period.

Shortly after the start of the third period, the Stars found themselves killing-off a five-on-three Rochester power-play. Solid defense and some great saves by Ellis helped preserve a 4-3 lead. Midway through the third with Rochester on a two-on-one and after Ellis made the initial save, Mark Ardelan again kept Iowa ahead when he dove through the crease and knocked the knuckling puck out of harms way with 9:40 left. Despite Iowa's defensive efforts, the Amerks were able to tie the score at four with 1:13 left in regulation.

Both teams went scoreless in the five-minute sudden death overtime period and had to use the shootout to decide the winner of the game. Tied with three goals at the end of five 'regulation rounds', the Amerks grabbed the winning goal off the stick of Mike Ryan in the seventh and ultimately final round. The Stars became the last team in the 27-team AHL to participate in a shootout this season.
