Stars Roar Past Knights, 5-2
December 27, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Iowa Stars reeled off four goals in the third period to overtake the Omaha Ak-SAr-Ben Knights and win 5-2 on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Joel Lundqvist had two goals, including the game-winner to spark the rally.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights broke through on the powerplay. While working the puck deep in the Iowa zone, Stars' defenseman Marty Wilford broke up the play but as he tried to clear the puck, Carsen Germyn stole it and whipped a wrist shot over Dan Elllis.
The Knights doubled their lead just 2:26 later. David Van der Gulik worked the forecheck behind the Stars' net and forced a bad pass from Iowa defenseman Nicklas Grossman. Warren Peters took the puck, wheeled out in a front and threw a shot on net. Ellis appeared to have the puck, but it broke off him and trickled into the net to make it 2-0.
The Stars got one goal back when Wilford kept the puck at the right point and hurried a shot on goal. It seemed to hit someone in front and ricocheted past Brent Krahn to make it 2-1 after one.
Iowa outshot the Knights 10-6 in the second period but as he did against Milwaukee last Saturday, Krahn made several tough saves in close to keep his team in front.
The Knights' lead lasted just 12 seconds into the third period. Lundqvist got free in the slot and beat Krahn with a wrist shot to tie the game at two.
Then with the teams skating four on four, Lundqvist lead the rush down the ice. Krahn stopped his initial shot but the rebound came right back to the Stars' forward, and he rammed it home for the go-ahead goal.
Scott May beat Krahn with an uncontested wrist shot just 1:22 later and Marius Holtet added a goal at 17:34 to complete the scoring.
The Knights are now 18-10-2-0. It was their first regulation loss when leading after two periods.
Three Stars: 1. Joel Lundqvist (IOW) - 2 goals, game-winner; 2. Chris Conner (IOW) - 2 assists; 3. Dan Ellis (IOW) - 18 saves
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights continue their brief two-game road swing on Wednesday night when they visit the San Antonio Rampage for a 7:00 p.m. face-off. They're back home on Friday to welcome the Stars in the first game of the "Kids' Weekend Celebration". Game time is 7:00 p.m.
