Lincoln Stars News Release
URBANDALE, IA-The second meeting between the Lincoln Stars and the Des Moines Buccaneers saw the pair of Western Conference foes pay homage to those affected by breast cancer and raising awareness to promote its end during Des Moines' annual "Pink the Rink" night. In front of a boisterous crowd, both sides pined urgently for a win following losses on Friday.
In the first, Matthew Brown did what he does best: score. His shot through a screen bested Tyler Johnson just shy of the 13 minute mark of the first, bringing the Buccaneers faithful to their feet. Through a slow start in the first, the Stars struggled to muster many quality chances, heading to first intermission down 1-0.
In the second period, the Stars picked up their tempo, earning three power play opportunities in the process. In all three efforts, they were thwarted by Roman Durny, who consistently made saves to preserve his team's lead.
For the second-straight period, the Bucs struck the twine just shy of the 13 minute marker. On a mad scramble in front of Tyler Johnson, the goalie thwarted a flurry of chances with sprawling saves. Kaden Bohlsen would not be denied however, as the puck kicked back to him off one of the diving saves. The Minnesota commit ripped the puck through to give his team a 2-0 lead that they took into the second intermission.
In the third, Lincoln turned the attack up to another level, out-shooting the Bucs 11-2 in the frame. Samuli Niinisaari ripped home his first goal with the Stars to put Lincoln on the board. The Stars dominated for much of the period until a bad bounce turned into a 2-on-1 off which Matt Brown found TJ Walsh for the 3-1 lead. The Stars got one back late with the goalie pulled, when Philippe Lapointe re-directed a Declan Carlile shot through to cut the deficit to just one with under two minutes to go. Ultimately the rally fell just short as time ran out on the Stars search for the equalizer.
A quick turnaround will send the Stars to Tri-City Tuesday as they look to bounce back from back-to-back losses. The Stars then return to the Ice Box Friday, October 19th at 7:05 pm for a game against Madison.
