MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN - The Steel couldn't solve Lumberjacks goaltender Brandon Bussi as the reigning USHL Goaltender of the Week blanked Chicago 6-0 Saturday night at L.C. Walker Arena. Chicago (2-3-1-0, 5 pts.) was held to 24 shots as Muskegon (5-0-0-0, 10 pts.) remained perfect this season.
After a Steel clearing attempt on the first Lumberjacks powerplay of the night, a tic-tac-toe passing play was finished off by left wing Jagger Joshua for the easy tip-in past Chicago goaltender Justin Robbins.
Muskegon doubled its lead 2:07 later when center Nolan Sullivan picked up a rebound and was able to slip it past a sprawling Robbins.
The Lumberjacks then exploded for a trio of goals in the final six minutes of the second period. Center Mikael Hakkarainen extended the lead when he poked in a loose puck with 5:54 to play in the second period. Joshua added his second of the night 2:34 later when he tipped an Egor Afanasyev shot past Robbins, who was screened by Joshua on the play. Right wing Danil Guschin then made it 5-0 with 5.4 seconds to play in the second period with a tap-in goal after the initial shot hit off the post behind Robbins.
Steel goaltender Reilly Herbst entered the game to play the third period and made a series of saves before right wing John Farinacci beat him 6:29 into the third. Herbst finished with 12 saves on 13 shots against.
Muskegon scored three times in six powerplay opportunities while Chicago was unable to capitalize on its five chances. Defensemen John Spetz (4) and Matteo Pietroniro (3) led the Steel in shots Saturday night.
Chicago returns to Fox Valley Ice Arena on Friday, Oct. 19 for Paint the Rink Pink Night presented by V Fusion Fitness Group. The Steel will wear custom pink jerseys during the game that will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds benefiting American Cancer Society Making Strides for Breast Cancer.
