SALT LAKE CITY - The Salt Lake City Stars grabbed the victory against the Memphis Hustle, 118-111, at the Maverik Center Monday evening inin a closely contested battle.
The Stars (7-8) jumped out shooting; earning 61.5 percent from three, while their defense was able to hold the Hustle (9-3) to 10-25 overall shooting. With Johnny Juzang and Stacy Davis notching eight-points respectively, the Stars took a dominant 40-23 lead to end the first.
Juzang's offense continued to be a threat as he led the Stars with 15 points to help Salt Lake City maintain the lead and end the half 60-56.
Frank Jackson and Tyler Cook brought some much-needed offense in the third before Memphis managed to find their rhythm offensively, outscoring the Stars 33-25 and jumping to an 89-85 lead entering the final frame.
A back and forth fourth quarter was led by the scoring of Elijah Cain, and Frank Jackson. Jackson scored 11 points in the final stretch as the Stars scored the victory 118-111.
Stars' starter, Frank Jackson led the team with 25 points on an impressive 9-of-15 shooting, and totaled four rebounds and three assists. Close behind, Johnny Juzang was on fire, scoring 24 points, and six rebounds. While center Tyler Cook noted his fifth double-double of the regular season with 11 rebounds and 13 points. Stacy Davis led the reserves with 12 points, and Eli Cain added 11 points to go with seven rebounds.
All five of the Hustle's starters scored in double-figures. Matt Hurt claimed a game-high 29 points on 13-of-20 shooting and put up five boards. Jacob Gilyard notched a double-double with an incredible 17 rebounds, and 15 points on the night. Former Utah State Aggie, Justin Bean added 17 points, six rebounds, and three blocks for Memphis.
The Stars rematch against the Hustle tomorrow in the second game of their back-to-back set. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. (MT) at the Maverik Center, where the Stars will host a STEM night showcasing the science and technology the local community has to offer.
