Des Moines, Iowa - Penalties bit the Lincoln Stars as they fell, 1-0, to the Des Moines Buccaneers in Buccaneer Arena on Friday night.
Lincoln fell to 4-5-0 this season in a game where they took six penalties and were outshot 38-30.
The Stars generated a few chances with two power plays in the first, but Buccaneers goalie Jan Ruzicka made 15 saves to keep it 0-0 through 20 minutes. Lincoln outshot Des Moines 15-8 in the first period.
Lincoln's best opportunity came at even strength late in the first when Ruzicka denied Casey Dornbach and Luka Maver on a two-on-one scoring chance.
Des Moines stole the momentum in the second period, outshooting Lincoln 17-5 in the frame. The Buccaneers were stopped on three power plays before Cameron Orchard scored at even strength to give them a 1-0 lead before the second intermission.
Orchard's goal held through the third period despite chances from both teams including a late power play that gave the Stars a six-on-four advantage with the extra attacker.
The Stars finished 0/4 on the power play and 6/6 on the penalty kill.
Josef Korenar made 37 saves.
