Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - Powered by an 18-save performance by Jaxon Castor, the Dubuque Fighting Saints shut out the Youngstown Phantoms (5-3-0, 10 points) 3-0 at the Covelli Centre on Friday night.
"Disappointing," said Phantoms head coach Brad Patterson. "We didn't have it tonight. It's our job to learn from this and get better from this and make sure it doesn't happen again."
Dubuque opened the scoring at 6:50 of the first period with a power play goal by Zach Solow. Solow floated a wrist shot from the right point that managed to find its way through traffic and past Phantoms' netminder Darion Hanson (19 saves). Solow's goal broke a string of 21 consecutive power plays killed by the Phantoms.
The Saints doubled their lead with at 9:41 with a 4-on-4 goal by Dallas Gerads. Cole Guttman found Gerads wide open on the back door for the easy goal and Dubuque lead 2-0 at the end of the first period.
Austin Rueschhoff made the 3-0 with a power play goal at 12:41 of the second period. Rueschhoff stepped out from behind the net and fired a backhand at Hanson that the Phantoms keeper got a piece of, but the puck rolled off on Hanson's shoulder and into the net. Dubuque's defense dominated the second period, allowing only two shots-on-goal.
The Phantoms had a few opportunities to score in the third period, managing to draw two power plays, and they pulled Hanson with 3:55 left in the game, but were unable to get anything past Castor.
When asked what adjustments could be made for tomorrow, Patterson had this to say, "The big thing for me is how we play and our identity. We weren't up to our standard tonight in that area."
Youngstown and Dubuque face off again tomorrow with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 pm. The game can be listened to on YPHR or watched on HockeyTV. It's Sci-Fi/Fantasy night at the Covelli Centre. The first 250 fans through the door will get a Vulcan Foam Hand.
