
Stars Acquire Rights to Former BYU Star Yoeli Childs

SALT LAKE CITY - The Salt Lake City Stars, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, announced today the acquisition of Utah native and former BYU star forwards Yoeli Childs' returning player rights in a trade with the Capital City Go-Go (Washington Wizards affiliate). In exchange the Stars sent the returning player rights of guard Yogi Ferrell and a 2022 first round draft pick (via Maine).
Childs (6-8, 225, BYU) joins the Stars with 12 games (five starts) of previous NBA G league experience with the Erie Skyhawks (now Birmingham Squadron) during the 2020-21 season. The 24-year-old averaged 8.9 points and 4.8 rebounds in 20.1 minutes a game. Childs scored four points, four rebounds and two assists in one playoff game with the Skyhawks. Earlier this season, Childs appeared in three games for MHP Riesen in the G-BBL and German Cup owning international averages of 7.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in 17.6 minutes.
Prior to his time in the NBA G League, the South Jordan, Utah, native attended BYU for four seasons (2016-20) appearing in 119 games (111 starts), averaging 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks a game while posting 45 career double-doubles. Childs received First Team All-West Coast Conference honors following the 2018, 2019 and 2020 seasons.
Childs attended Bingham High School in South Jordan, where he averaged 18.5 points and 10.7 rebounds while helping lead the Miners to a 6A Utah State Championship in 2015-16.
Ferrell (6-0, 180, Indiana) appeared in 14 games for the Stars during the 2020-21 season prior to being called up by the LA Clippers
In an unrelated move, the Stars also waived forward Derrick Griffin and activated Derrick Alston Jr. from the health and safety protocol inactive list.
Griffin (6-7, 230, Texas Southern) appeared in two games for the Stars this season.
