Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks dropped the second game of a three game series 4-2 at the hands of the red hot Sioux City Explorers on Thursday night before a crowd of 1,294 at Lewis and Clark Park.

Sioux City jumped on the board first in the second inning. Ryan Court and Tommy Mendonca started with back-to-back doubles plating one. Brendan Slattery would follow that with an RBI single scoring Mendonca making it 2-0.

The RedHawks would respond in the top half of the third. Ryan Pineda led off the frame with a single and would wheel all the way to third on a Taylor Oldham single. Two batters later Drew Muren lifted a fly ball to deep center allowing Pineda to score making it 2-1.

Fargo-Moorhead would get to Explorers' starter Eric Wordekemper again in the fourth. Joe Bonfe took the second offering from Wordekemper and belted it over the fence for his second homer of the season tying the game 2-2.

Pitching in a 2-2 game, Taylor Stanton dominated the next three innings. Stanton would retire the side in the third, fourth and fifth innings, including striking out the side in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Stanton entered the seventh inning but the Explorers got to him. Mendonca led off with a single and would advance to second on a wild pitch. Slattery would drive him in again, this time with a double to the alley in left making it 3-2. Rookie Nick Cooney would relieve Stanton after he went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts on 90 pitches.

The Explorers would add on an insurance run in the eighth. Rene Tosoni would single and be driven in later by Brock Kjeldgaard giving Sioux City a 4-2 lead.

A Bonfe single followed by a walk from Charlie Valerio appeared to spark a rally from the RedHawks. Bonfe and Valerio would steal third and second, respectively, on a Ryan Pineda swinging strike three bringing up Taylor Oldham to the dish as the winning run with two outs. Oldahm grounded out to short ending the game.

Despite the good start, Stanton (3-3) drops the tough decision while Rob Wort (7-3) earned the win for his relief work in the seventh and eighth innings. Jose Flores came on and earned his 16th save of the season.

Fargo-Moorhead drops its sixth straight game and falls to 23-46 while Sioux City improves to 51-18 while winning their eighth in a row. Tomorrow night's series finale will feature the battle of the league's top two strikeout pitchers in Brandon Mann and Patrick Johnson. Mann (3-7, 4.78) leads Johnson in strikeouts as he has 91 on the season, but Johnson (89 strikeouts) is a perfect 10-0 and leads the American Association with an ERA of 1.81. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with Scott Miller on the call.

NOTES: Chad Mozingo's 12 game hitting streak ended as he went 0-for-4. Zach Penprase went 1-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to eight games.
