
Canaries Drop Series Opener with 13-4 Loss to Grand Prairie

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX-The Sioux Falls Canaries (28-41) continued their week-long roadtrip through the state of Texas, opening up a three-game series against the Grand Prairie AirHogs (24-45). The Birds' racked up 14 hits on Wednesday night, but couldn't keep the Hogs off the board, falling by the final score of 13-4 on Wednesday night at Quick-Trip Park.
The Canaries took an early 2-0 lead, sparked by a two-out rally in the top of the second inning. Cody Bishop started the attack with a two-out double, and later scored on a Brett Balkan RBI single. Balkan advanced to third on a Chris Grayson base hit, and later scored the second run of the inning on a Jerome Pena RBI single.
The Birds' lead was short lived, with Grand Prairie getting one run back in the bottom of the second, and took the lead for good with two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Starting pitcher Tyler Pearson (3-3, 6.34 ERA) suffered the loss, after allowing four runs on three hits. The right-hander recorded three strikeouts, but battled command issues, walking five Grand Prairie batters in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Reliever Josh Ferrell also had a tough night, allowing eight runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Brian Humphries finished the night 0-for-5, snapping his team-best 13-game hitting streak. It was an
Impressive run for the American Association's reigning player of the month, hitting .390 (23-for-59) with two doubles, six homeruns, and 13 RBI's during his streak.
Pena had a big night offensively for the Canaries going 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBI's and a run scored. Bishop also had a good night, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
The series continues on Thursday night with RHP Shawn Blackwell (2-7, 4.09 ERA) toeing the rubber for the Birds.

The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday, August 8th to open up a three-game series against their I-29 rivals, the Sioux City Explorers at 6:05 PM.
