Stanley Cup on display at Saturday's home opener

ALBANY, N.Y. - The most coveted prize in professional hockey - the Stanley Cup - will be on display at the Albany River Rats 2006-07 regular-season home opener Saturday, October 14 against the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. at Pepsi Arena.

The Stanley Cup, the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, was donated by Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl or Derby, in 1893. Lord Stanley purchased the trophy for 10 guineas ($50 at the time) for presentation to the amateur hockey champions of Canada. Since 1910, when the National Hockey Association took possession of the Stanley Cup, the trophy has been the symbol of professional hockey supremacy. It has been competed for only by NHL teams since 1926-27 and has been under exclusive control of the NHL since 1947. The River Rats new NHL affiliate - the Carolina Hurricanes - are the defending Stanley Cup champions.

All fans attending the home opener against Hamilton will have the opportunity to pose for pictures with the Stanley Cup on the Pepsi Arena concourse throughout the game. Arena doors open at 6:00 p.m. and fans are invited to bring their own cameras to the game, or for a nominal fee, have their pictures taken professionally.

Additional opening night highlights include:

* The first 2,500 fans will receive a River Rats Magnetic 2006-07 Schedule, courtesy of Pepsi.

* South Pearl Street in front of Pepsi Arena will be abuzz with a block party presented by 104.9 FM - The Edge from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with inflatable games, rock climbing and food. There will also be live music from Teknique.

* The home debut of the River Rats new uniforms, which feature a new logo and color scheme to commemorate the new affiliation with the Carolina Hurricanes.

* The debut of the "new" Rowdy, the official mascot of the River Rats.
