Stanley Cup Coming To Tulsa
February 20, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release
Fred Gibbon will see an old friend next month, a friend he's seen on TV, but not in person since 1975.
His friend is often referred to as Stanley-Stanley Cup.
Gibbon is the scout emeritus for the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League, and was a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League when the Flyers became Stanley Cup Champions in 1974 and 1975. These days Gibbon never misses an Oilers game (unless on a road trip with the Tulsa Rampage Jr. A hockey team) and proudly sports his Flyers Stanley Cup ring.
Now 85, Gibbon helps keep Oilers fans entertained with various dance routines at his customary location at section 116 during intermissions. He shows his Stanley Cup ring with deserved pride. A picture of Gibbon with the Stanley Cup on the Flyers' team plane in 1975 is prominently displayed with pride in the Oilers' administrative office.
The Oilers are teaming with U. S. Cellular to bring the Stanley Cup to Tulsa for a two day visit March 7-8. Fans will be able to view the NHL trophy 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7^th at the U.S. Cellular Store on 41^st St. and Sheridan and from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8^th at the store at 71^st and Garnett. Oilers players and mascot Bladez along with U.S. Cellular mascot Celby will greet fans on both days. Fans will have the opportunity to have their picture taken with trophy and the Oilers players both days.
The Stanley Cup will then be on display at both Oilers home games (March 7^th against Amarillo and March 8^th against Wichita) that weekend.
"I told (Flyers' General Manger) Keith Allen and (team owner) Ed Snider that if they signed Fred Shero to coach the team give him two years, and then he'll win the Cup two times after that," Gibbon recalls with a razor like memory. "And that's exactly what happened."
The Oilers play at Amarillo Friday at 7:05 p.m. That can be heard on KRVT AM 1270 and accessed via the internet at www.tulsaoilers.com and CHL Network. The Oilers next home game is Saturday against Oklahoma City at 7:35. That will be followed by a jersey auction and a meet the team party at Ju Jax (155th and Memorial in Bixby).
