Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - The Youngstown SteelHounds of the Central Hockey League announced today that goaltender Brad Roberts and the United States Army will be hosting a "School Supply Drive" for children in Afghanistan from February 29th thru March 2nd when the Hounds host the Wichita Thunder.

"A classmate of mine in Afghanistan told me about the need for school supplies. He is an infantry officer on the front lines," said Roberts. "These kids deserve the opportunity at a good education but cannot without the right supplies. I am really glad that my classmate told me about this because this is a great way for us to help."

Fans are encouraged to donate school supplies throughout the weekend. The U.S. Army will deliver them to children in Afghanistan to help give them a chance at a better future.

"This is truly a worthwhile cause", said SteelHounds General Manager Joe Gregory. "I'm glad Brad brought this to our attention. It's easy to loose sight of the people affected by conflict. I'm hope that through this school supply drive we can make a difference no matter how small."

Brad Roberts, 25, played four years for Army (2002-06) where he set 13 Academy records including most career saves with 3,013. Roberts became the first hockey player to receive the United States Military Academy's highest athletic honor in the Army Athletic Association Trophy in 2006. Last season as a rookie for the Hounds the native of Cassville, New York was 23-12-4 and finished tied for third in the CHL for wins. In 13 starts this season he is 6-5-1 with a 3.28 goals against average and a .879 save percentage. He is currently on the injured reserve list. Off the ice Brad Roberts is a First lieutenant and currently serves as a Professor of Military Science for Youngstown State University's ROTC Program.
