Calgary Stampeders News Release

The Calgary Stampeders and their great fans are proud to support the Canadian Red Cross and that organization's exemplary relief work in the wake of the devastating flooding in Calgary and Southern Alberta.

"Let's Do Whatever It Takes To Support Southern Alberta" is the theme for Friday night's regular-season opener against the BC Lions at McMahon Stadium as fans will get the opportunity to make a contribution to the Red Cross as well as to honour some of the first responders and civilian heroes for their work during the ongoing crisis.

"The fans' message to us was loud and clear," said Stampeders president Gordon Norrie. "They wanted to do whatever it takes to help their fellow citizens in their time of dire need and we are more than happy to provide them with that opportunity. The Red Cross is renown for their excellent work and we couldn't be more pleased to be partnering with them at this critical time."

Fans will be able to make cash donations at the entrance gates on Friday and proceeds from the 50/50 draw will be directed to the Red Cross through the Stamps Foundation for flood relief efforts. The Stampeders organization has elected to cancel its annual pre-season team dinner and to turn the money that had been earmarked for the event over to the Red Cross.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi will be in attendance to help pay tribute to representatives of the first-response agencies for their heroic efforts and to the indomitable spirit of Calgarians and Southern Albertans throughout the crisis. A moment of silence will be observed in respect to those who have lost their lives as a result of the disaster.

"This has been a very difficult time in Southern Alberta and the community's resilience in this tragic time has been astounding," said Norrie. "These have been the worst of times and yet we have seen time and time again that the tragedy has brought on the best in our citizens. We couldn't be more proud to be a part of this community."
