Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders launch their 2013 regular-season schedule on Friday, June 28 when the BC Lions provide the opposition at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff for the game, which is presented by Grey Eagle Casino, is at 8 p.m.
It's the 68th season of Stampeders football and the Red and White is looking to defend its West Division title and earn a trip to the 101st Grey Cup in Regina.
The Stamps are 36-30-1 in all-time home-openers including a 15-8 mark since the 1990 season and a 3-2 record since John Hufnagel took over as head coach and general manager in 2008. This is the first since 2008 the Stamps have faced the Lions in the opening game of the regular season.
All eight of the Stamps' 2012 West Division all-stars - running back Jon Cornish, receiver Nik Lewis, offensive lineman Dimitri Tsoumpas, defensive lineman Charleston Hughes, linebacker Juwan Simpson, defensive back Keon Raymond, kicker Rene Paredes and punter Rob Maver - are back in Calgary colours in 2013.
Tickets
Fans can purchase tickets for Friday's contest by visiting Stampeders.com or by calling the Ticket Office at 403-289-0258 or 1-800-667-3267. Time is also running out on your chance to secure your seat for the entire year by purchasing season tickets.
Red Cross flood relief support
"Let's Do Whatever It Takes To Support Southern Alberta" is the theme for Friday night's game as the Stamps are proud to support the Canadian Red Cross and that organization's exemplary relief work in the wake of the devastating flooding in Calgary and Southern Alberta. Fans will get a chance to make a contribution to the Canadian Red Cross as well as to honour some of the first responders and civilian heroes for their work during the ongoing crisis. Financial donations will be accepted at the entrance gates and proceeds from the 50/50 draw will be directed to the Canadian Red Cross through the Stamps Foundation for flood relief efforts. The Stampeders organization has elected to cancel its annual pre-season team dinner and to turn the money that had been earmarked for the event over to the Canadian Red Cross.
Dudes rock halftime
Acclaimed Calgary indie band The Dudes will be performing at halftime of Friday's game. Formed in Calgary in 1996, The Dudes have been named "Calgary's Favourite Band" by FFWD newspaper on multiple occasions and have long had a strong local following before earning greater national and international recognition in recent years.
Calixte honoured
Canadian linebacker Marc Calixte, whose 10-year career with the Stamps drew to a close in 2012, will be honoured for his decade with the Red and White in a special halftime ceremony. Calixte joined the team in 2003 and played 147 regular-season games in his 10 seasons for the Red and White. He also played in nine playoff contests and was a member of the Stamps' Grey Cup-winning squad in 2008. The Laval, Que., native was a special-teams standout throughout his career in Calgary and he had 91 career special-teams tackles including a personal best of 17 in 2009. He served as the Stamps' special-teams captain and was an active member of the community.
Nissan Fan Zone
The game-day activity starts two-and-a-half hours before kickoff with the Nissan Fan Zone, which is located across from the Ticket Office on the East side of McMahon Stadium. Select Stamps players will be on hand to meet fans, pose for photos and sign autographs. The Fan Zone will also feature the Tailgate Food Truck.
Stampeders Kids Club
The Stampeders have again teamed up with New York Fries to present the Kids Club. Stop by the tent in the North concourse behind sections J and K to learn more about the program and to register. Memberships are just $30 for the entire season and include, among other things, an official membership card and lanyard, a 30-per cent discount voucher for the Stamps Store (one-time use) and a Kids Club starter pack that includes a Stamps drawstring backpack, an autograph pen, a mini-football, a Whatever it Takes T-shirt and a New York Fries passport.
