Stamps sign former first overall pick

(Calgary) – Today Calgary Stampeders' Head Coach and VP of Football Operations, Tom Higgins, announced the free agent signing of Offensive Lineman Alexandre Gauthier. He played the last 3 CFL season with the Ottawa Renegades...was drafted in the 1st round (1st overall) in the 2002 Canadian College Draft.

As per Club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"Alexandre is a young improving offensive lineman whose career is in front of him. Last season he switched to left tackle and played very consistently," stated Offensive Coordinator Steve Buratto. "With his Canadian status he gives us lots of options on the offensive line."

Entering his first season with the Calgary Stampeders...signed as a free agent on February 16, 2005...played the last 3 CFL season with the Ottawa Renegades...was drafted in the 1st round (1st overall) in the 2002 Canadian College Draft.

2004

Started first six games of the season at right guard...injury kept him out of the line-up in week seven against Stamps in Calgary, week eight at B.C. and week 9 against Hamilton...returned in week 10 in Edmonton and was immediately thrown in the fire, starting at left tackle...held his own in the starting role...in week 11 at home against Montreal, then week 12 against B.C., got the starting nod at left tackle again.

2003

Appeared in seven games...missed nine games due to back injury...dressed and played in first 2003 game Aug. 12 at Winnipeg...returned to action Sept. 26 vs CAL and obtained substantial playing time after first-quarter injury to Val St. Germain.

2002

Dressed for first CFL game Sept. 14 at Calgary...played in back-to-back games Oct. 26 and Nov. 3 during home-and-home series against Montreal...spent most of season on injury list (knee)...recorded one tackle on special teams.

UNIVERSITY

1999-2002: Studied at the Universite Laval in Quebec City, where he represented the Rouge et Or in football... Member of the Laval Vanier Cup-championship team in 1999...member of the Ontario-Quebec Interuniversity Football Conference-finalist Laval (2000)...member of Quebec Interuniversity Football Conference-champion Laval which qualified for the Atlantic Bowl, one of the two national semi-final games (2001)...graduated from Laval in Physical Education (June 2002).

NOTEWORTHY

Played CEGEP (Quebec junior college) AAA basketball with the Ste. Foy Dynamites, giving up the sport midway through his second season for hockey (1994-95 and 1995-96)...played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Val d'Or Foreurs (1995-96)...in 1997 he played on his first organized football club with the Trois-Rivieres Diablos in the CEGEP system, where he immediately became a starter.
